The Franks:
Charlemange was emperor of the German/Frank empire during the Dark Ages. He established learning centers. He also fought the Moors who were invading Spain, and repelled the Vikings with his river forts. When he died the empire crumbled. Vikings came and attacked Paris several times, then pillaged the coasts of Northern France. They finally settled and became the Normans. France was divided into Normandy, Brittany, and Aquitane to name a few. When William the Conqueror conquered England he claimed both the English and French crown. England owned most of France until the Hundred Years War. The king of France was in hiding. Joan of Arc, at the age of 13, set out on her quest. The Dauphin was crowned and Joan fought the English. When she was captured, surprisingly he did not offer a ransom. The French and English still quarreled well after the Hundred Years War.
