The Turks

Known as the Seljuk Turks, they harassed the Crusaders on the way to the Holy Land. Eventually they became the Ottoman empire, who called themselves the " Swords of God."
Soon all of Turkey was theirs except Constantinople. In 1453 the walls of Constantinople fell and it soon became capital of the Ottomans. The walls were thick, but a huge cannon that could shoot 1200 hundred pound stone cannonballs soon broke down the wall. The Ottomans trained an army of Jannisaries. These were Christian boys aged 10-14 who studied under the king's command. They would either become military officers or government officials. The greatest ruler of the Ottomans was Suleiman the Magnificent. He was greatly feared by Europe and was even more feared when he attacked the city of Vienna. The Ottoman empire was responsible for its own fall. The Jannisaries became too powerful and the rulers corrupt.
