The Saracens

The Saracens were from Arabia, Bedouins who herded animals. When Mohammed introduced his new religion in the 600s, Bedouins became Muslims. Eventually in Europe they became known as the Saracens. The Saracens attacked Iran, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Africa, and Spain. The religion spread everywhere. When they captured Jerusalem and the Holy Land, the popes of Europe preached crusade against the invaders or "Saracens." The First Crusade did not go so well, but did establish a foothold in the Holy Land. At the time of the Second Crusade, a Saracen general named Saladin challenged the Crusaders. He defeated them at Hattin, and recaptured Jerusalem. A Third Crusade was launched, defeating Saladin. Eventually, the Saracens or Moors as they were known were pushed out of Spain.
