The Teutons

The tribes inhabiting modern day Germany were known as Teutons. They harassed the Romans and helped for their downfall. The Teutonic tribes hunted, fished, farmed, and cleared swamps and forests for a living. The first great ruler over the Teutons was Otto I, who organized the various tribes and dukes. He  was known as the "Charlemange of Germany." He hoped to revive the Holy Roman Empire, but never could. Good kings made Germany flourish. Great cathedrals and cities arose. Frederick Barbarossa also did a lot for Germany, by almost reviving the Holy Roman Empire. During the later Middle Ages the Germans eventually formed the Hanseatic League, one of the most powerful trading leagues ever. The Teutonic Knights, an order from the Holy Land, moved to Eastern Europe and expanded the German Empire while converting the pagan tribes to Christianity.
